Impounded vehicles behind secure fencing.

Why the type of licence becomes a problem

When a manual car is impounded, the pound must check that whoever collects it can drive it legally. An automatic-only licence does not allow you to drive a manual vehicle on UK roads. That restriction applies even if the car is yours, even if you have the right insurance and even if the pound is only a short distance away.

The licence classification sits alongside the pound’s identity, ownership and insurance checks. If the person attending cannot legally drive a manual car, road release becomes impossible until an eligible driver is provided.

What the pound will still expect from you

Even though you cannot drive the car yourself, the pound still treats you as the registered keeper (if your name is on the V5C). You normally need to attend in person with:

  • Strong photographic ID.
  • The V5C or acceptable alternatives if the logbook is missing.
  • Payment of the statutory release and storage fees.

Once your identity and keeper status are confirmed, the pound can discuss how the vehicle will leave the compound.

Why you cannot just use insurance to get around the restriction

Insurance cannot override licence law. Even if you arranged a compliant impounded-vehicle policy, you still would not be legally permitted to drive a manual car with an automatic-only licence.

If you intend for someone else to drive the vehicle out, that person must have their own valid licence for manual vehicles, and the insurance certificate must show them as the insured driver. The pound checks this carefully.

Option 1: Bring a driver who holds a manual licence

This is the option most keepers choose. The process usually works as follows:

  • You attend as the keeper with your ID and ownership documents.
  • A driver with a full manual licence attends with you.
  • The driver is named on a policy that specifically includes impounded-vehicle cover (normally a policy of around thirty days).
  • The pound verifies all documents and allows the manual-licence driver to take the car out.

The key point is that the pound must see that the person driving away is legally qualified to drive a manual car. A permission letter alone is not enough.

Option 2: Release via a specialist vehicle-recovery company

If you have no access to a manual-licence driver, or if suitable insurance is too expensive, the pound may allow release by a specialist recovery operator.

This varies by site. Some pounds require advance notice, some require the recovery firm to show ID and paperwork, and some only allow recovery if the vehicle cannot legally or safely be driven. Recovery tends to be expensive and may involve delays, but it avoids licence issues entirely because the vehicle leaves on a truck rather than under its own power.

Option 3: Wait for licence upgrade (rarely practical)

In theory you could upgrade your licence by taking a manual test. In practice this is rarely workable because impound deadlines are short. Pounds normally allow around a week to claim the vehicle and roughly a fortnight to collect it, though these timings differ by authority.

Licence upgrades take much longer than this, so waiting for a manual test is almost never a viable solution.

Roadworthiness and MOT still matter

Even if a manual-licence driver is available, the pound must still be satisfied that the vehicle is safe to be driven away. If the car has no MOT, serious defects or other safety concerns, the pound may insist on recovery rather than road release.

A practical way forward

Start by contacting the pound and confirming exactly what documents they need from you as the keeper. Then decide whether you will bring a manual-licence driver with a suitable impound-ready insurance policy, or whether recovery is the more realistic option.

Once identity, ownership and a lawful method of removal line up with the pound’s records, release normally follows the authority’s standard procedure, even when the original driver holds only an automatic licence.

Keep in mind that a relaxed pace helps pound staff avoid mistakes, and a calm environment helps everyone think more clearly.
